Anti-Parkinson’s drugs
Fall incidents in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD) are frequent and recurrent, with 45–68% of people falling annually 1 and two-thirds of these falling recurrently.2 Patients with PD are usually on a high number of FRIDs putting them at even a higher risk of falls.3 It is, essential to manage this disease and understand the impact of Anti-Parkinson’s medications and FRIDs on patients’ fall risk.4,5
- Determine whether the patient has neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (nOH) by monitoring 3-minute SBP of the patient, their sitting blood pressure, supine blood pressure as well as heart rate. If nOH is detected the consider:6
- Adding Fludrocortisone, Midrodineb, Domperidone and Physostigmine
- Request specialist advice if a decrease in the dose of particular PD medication is required.6
- Consider reviewing the patient if on any drugs that can worsen the symptoms such as:7
- Antipsychotics
- Anti-emetics
